Q: One of my friends is a wedding photographer. Is the job permissible? He doesn’t print the photos off and hands it to the customer as a CD, but the same time he takes photos in a mixed gender environment. Will the money he earns be halal? Or will he just incur a sin whilst doing the job? Is photography halal? Even though he doesn’t print the photos, but if he was do so, would that be halal?
الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومنه الصدق والصواب
A: The permissibility of digital images per se is a point of difference amongst the scholars. However, taking photos of an unrelated member of the opposite gender is unanimously prohibited. Any job that comprises an impermissible activity is impermissible to the extent of the impermissible activity and the income earned from the same is also unlawful.
