What is the ruling on the permissibility of conventional travel insurance products?

Q: What is the ruling on the permissibility of conventional travel insurance products?

My particular concern focuses on the potential for significant medical expenses incurred outside your country of residence, where such facilities are unlikely to be free for non-residents. Are there any halal/takaful travel insurance products available?

الجواب حامدًا و مصليًا و منه الصدق و الصواب

A: The ruling for conventional travel insurance is the same as conventional general insurance. Quite often, medical facilities are not even free for residents of many countries. I am not aware of any UK based travel insurance company but there are Takaful alternatives within some Muslim countries. That said, I am not sure as to whether UK residents can avail of such products.
