Q: Is my wife’s student loan something that I as the husband should be considering repaying back on her behalf, on the basis that she may not go back into employment? Does the loan become the husband’s responsibility? What if the husband is currently in the process of clearing his own personal debts?

A: Repaying the student loan taken by your wife is not your responsibility. It is the responsibility of your wife. If your wife does not ever reach the repayment threshold she too is not required to repay the loan. The loan currently remains potentially payable and cannot be written off as yet. It is only when the stipulated period expires for the demand to repay can the loan be totally written off.
