Can a pregnant woman take a travel insurance?

Q: Is it permissible for a woman, who is pregnant, to take out travel insurance, as (some say, I am not certain if it is true), they say that some airlines do not let them travel without it.

الجواب حامدا ومصليا ومسلما ومنه الصدق والصواب

A: If the airline will not allow travel without it then she may take out the required insurance to allow her to travel. However, in the event of a claim she should only claim what she has paid in premium. The purpose of travel should not be trivial, such as for a holiday, but she should not also be inconvenienced in her normal life. Where insurance has been allowed it tends to be either to allow one to go about one’s normal business or to avoid insurmountable harm. For me the purpose of travel must be absolutely essential for the high risk individual and the potential cost must also be insurmountable.
